Costa Rica Retirement and Living

“How do you like living in Costa Rica?”
Is one of the questions I am most frequently asked by guests and tourists. “I do.” Is usually my simple reply. Most people are curious, but others are more than curious, they really want to know. They are thinking about either living, investing, or retiring in Costa Rica. They are trying to make a decision in their lives and they are seeking answers.
But first, “Are you happy?” Because, if you’re not happy living in Costa Rica, nothing else you say after that really matters.
Save on Groceries
It doesn’t matter how much you save on groceries, electricity, car repair, or eating out. It doesn’t matter if their are monkeys in the trees and you have a waterfall in your backyard. If you’re not happy, the money you save, is irrelevant. Because after all, this life is not about finding cheap lettuce, it’s about happiness.
Get Happy in Costa Rica
Will living or retiring in Costa Rica be a happy experience for you? It depends of course on you. Half the foreigners, that end up living in Costa Rica, return to their country of origin - sometimes quickly. The reasons are various and I go into them in greater detail on my posts.
ooh, Climate and Crime - not to mention bugs.
From climate to crime, and everything else, are reasons foreigners permanently depart Costa Rica. Many come seeking work, or to invest in a business, and when they either run out of money or fail, are left with no option but to leave Costa Rica. For others, especially those planning to retire in Costa Rica, it’s an “in-adaptability” issue. For example, bank lines and bad drivers, have caused some to go home. The point is - that some people don’t find happiness in Costa Rica.
Sitting on a Freeway
Although, I can’t claim that every day of living in Costa Rica has brought me happiness, it’s as my surfing buddy and I discussed yesterday evening, as we surfed in the warm Pacific waters of Costa Rica. “Right now I could be sitting on a freeway, or I could be here surfing at sunset. You don’t hear me complaining.” Occasionally, we do take living in Costa Rica for granted, and as my surfing buddy says, “At times I need to check myself. Remind myself of where I could be in life, and be grateful.”
Yes, I do like living in Costa Rica
So the answer is yes. I have found happiness living in Costa Rica. Yes, I do like living in Costa Rica. Not every day is paradise in paradise. But in general, there is no other place I want to be right now, than living in Costa Rica. I will try and answer the most common questions people ask about living and retiring in Costa Rica.
